Phileas Fogg - New Jersey

So far, we've compiled lists for Great Britian, Ireland, Spain, Japan, Switzerland, New York and more in order to build our own master 1,000 Places to See Before You Die compendium. Today, we're doing Jersey and I need your help!

You see, 1,000 Places to See Before You Die only lists Cape May as a destination. And all I know about Cape May is that my sister spent several weeks there in the Coast Guard's boot camp.

So, this is a shout out to you, New Jersey! Help me fill in the blanks. What are the must-see, must-do things in New Jersey? Make your recommendations below.

And be sure to check out our other "Phileas Fogg" archives here.

It was a long time ago but I did stay in Hoboken NJ for a few weeks. There's a Frank Sinatra Museum
and also a bar where they shot part of Hudson Hawk.(and apparently Frankie used to meet with his Italian 'Friends' in a back room )
However
You do get a great panorama of Manhattan Island from Stevens Point. Also the ferry from Hoboken to Battery Park I would rate as one of the worlds best commutes, up there with the Star Ferry from Kowloon to HK Island. (Although this was well before Sept 11th )

Things to do in Jersey:

1. Get gas (much cheaper than in NY State)
2. Do some shopping (lower taxes than NY State)
3. Buy tomatoes and corn as you head back to NY or PA.
4. Go to or from Newark Airport.
5. Visit Liberty Science Center.
6. Stop somewhere on the NJ TPK or GSP as you drive to either NY or PA.
7. Admire Hoboken. Hum some Sinatra while there.
8. Visit the Howard Stern rest area on one of the highways (former Gov and one time W toady Chrissy Whitman made good on her [on-air] campaign promise to Stern, and named a rest stop after him).
9. Wonder why they just don't give Staten Island to NJ, maybe in exchange for half of Liberty Island, or as part of a swap with NYC for Bergen Co.
10 Take the GW Bridge into the city.
11. Take in a Trenton Yankees minor league ball game (you go to the prison, make a right, go down three or four blocks, and there's the stadium).
12. Try to spot Sopranos locations.
13. Dine at a Portugese restaurant in the Ironbound section of Newark.
14. Dine at a Cuban restaurant in either Elizabeth or Jersey City.
15. Gaze in stupicification at the big hair, and all those limos headed to Little Italy and other NYC/Philly loci...and wonder why they live in Jersey and yet always feel compelled to hang in NYC or Philly, and why big hair remains so popular there.
16. Visit Cape May and gaze at all the beautiful old houses. Then drive back to NY or PA, rather than pay the $$ to stay there overnight.
17. Avoid Atlantic City much like one avoids Vegas.
18. While avoiding Altantic City, visit the White House sandwich shop on the outskirts and observe in shock how much mayo they put on a sandwich, even when people say, "no mayo, please!"
19. Scrape the mayo off that sandwich, a formidable task which will no doubt work up one's appetite, then enjoy it.
20. Realize that all those bottles and cans from Jersey don't have a 5ยข deposit, and throw them out at the next rest stop.

Well, we'll just have to do something about that. Let me add to Dean's list.

1. Not just cheaper gas, but they have to pump it for you. (It's the law!)
2. Lucy the Elephant
3. Springsteen concerts
5. Sopranos tour
6. Edison museum in West Orange
7. Best pizza anywhere (because we have the most Italians)
8. Princeton

Don't forget Washington's Headquarters in Morristown and Jockey Hollow.

And definitely have a meal at Mastoris (http://www.mastoris.com/main_menu.html) in Bordentown. It's the king of Jersey diners. (I'm a fan of #61, myself.)

One more thing: if you can't make it to Katz's, or if you just "doughnwannaleaveJoizee," you can get too much cholesterol at Harold's in a few different NJ locations.

I used to have a client with offices off Rte 3 in Lyndhurst, and would pass Harold's going to and from the place. The client, upon learning of my insatiable love and desire for excellent deli food, said, "would you believe here in Jersey there are three or four of these Harold's restaurants?" Having never even heard of them, I was curious. The client then demanded to take me and my partner there, to prove to us that genuine NY Deli food, both in terms of quality and size of portions, could be found in NJ.

He was correct. I've taken my kids there to let them enjoy the spectacle and the show. And the food, too.

Take a ride on Route 22 westbound from Newark to Philipsburgh. What other state has such diversity on one short road?

The Ocean City boardwalk. No bars. No wheels (except when they have the hot rod or Corvette gatherings). No loud music. Just a great comfortable walk, good food, and family fun. Grab a seat at the end of the music pier with a good book like my wife or an iPod like me, and enjoy killing a few hours over the water.

And by the way, the best bagels I've ever had -- dense and chewy schmeared with a super spinach/garlic or bacon horseradish cream cheese -- are also in OC -- Bagels by the Beach on Asbury Ave. Oh yeah; I've still got the weeks of August 28 available on my OC rental condo. ;-)

Woodbridge. The confluence of the major rivers of vitality of NJ...Route 1, Route 9, the Turnpike, the Parkway, and 287. Get lost in the interchanges.

The blueberry farms in Hammonton. There's a great road by them between 30 and 422 that is perfect for opening up the throttle on my 'vette.

Rutt's Hut and Ryland Inn for the best of both ends of the culinary scale. (Adding a third R, Rita's Water Ice -- half cherry/half citrus for me.)

The Princeton campus and art museum. (And Conte's Pizza while you're in the neighborhood.)

The Cape May-Lewes Ferry.

The Delaware Water Gap.

And enjoy the mayo at the White House.

Almost forgot...

Shep's New Jersey of my youth.

Posted by: Frank Patrick | May 15, 2004 12:40 AM

I agree with these choices so far:
(1) The Great Falls in Paterson
(2) A Jersey shore boardwalk (Seaside or Wildwood) on a summer night
(3) the B&B's in Cape May
(4) the Delaware Water Gap
(5) Nassau Street in Princeton
I'd add the following:
(1) Boulevard East in Weehawken/West New York for the great NYC views
(2) Commerce Bank Park in Bridgewater, home of the Somerset Patriots
(3) USS New Jersey
(4) Sandy Hook
(5) Palisade Interstate Park, Fort Lee

From an ex-NJ Boy
1) Yogi Berra Museum, located in Montclair by Montclair State University.
2) High Point State Park (especially in the winitertime; you can sled for miles..)..also, it contains the highest point in NJ.
3) NJ Aquarium in Camden
4) New Hope in PA is nice...but go across the river to Lambertville for less crowds and more walkable streets.
5) Cape May Point for a great sunset and interesting things to pick up on the beach.
6) While you're there, Cape May State Park for some of the best birding on the East Coast.
7) Yeee HAAAH! Cowtown in S. Jersey for real rodeos and dust in your face.
8) Branch Brook Park in.....Newark. At Cherry Blossom time around Easter, it rivals Washington DC.
9) Princeton Record Exchange. Great selection of used and new cd's, dvd's, and lp's. While you're there, check out Princeton...Not too shabby a place.
