I Call Bullshit and Offer My Own Best Political Bloggers Contest
I have believed that these type of beauty contests were bogus ever since the insipid Titanic beat out the better acted/ photographed/ directed/ WRITTEN L.A. Confidential for Best Picture in 1998. The fact that The Corner was nominated in virtually every category of the WaPo's Best Blogger Contest only helps to prove that this old fuck was was probably up for nights on end creating new Yahoo! and GMail accounts to stuff ye olde digital ballot box.
But, I digress ...
On Kim's and Mick's suggestion, we're gonna have our own Rox Populi Best Political Bloggers Contest. All of it will be above board (as much as we can control that). In a few hours, I'll create a fancy-schmancy tile/logo the winners will be able to paste on their site.
But first, we'll start with the categories and nominations. The following are mine, but you can add your nominees in comments below:
Court Jester (now doesn't that sound better than class clown?):
Progressive Male Bloggers Who've Learned Their Lesson and (Hopefully) Won't Mention the Female Blogger Thing Again:
- Jesse and Ezra at Pandagon
- Matthew Yglesias
- Kevin Drum
- Matt Stoller, writing at BOP, MyDD, and countless other places the party has him write for

Well, that's all the nominations and categories I have folks! If you want to add more, do so in the comments area below. You have until midnight EST on October 3 to do so. As I have access, I'll round up a panel of "celebrity" media types to make the final selections. Good luck to all.
UPDATE: Here's a tile you can post on your site once you've been nominated. In fact, if anyone wants to post this tile on their site, I won't stop them. Go for it.

Who the fuck are you to decide
Posted by: Anon | 29 September 2004 at 11:09
I am thrilled and proud just to be in the same categorey as Mouse Words and Pinko Feminist Hellcat. You've totally, totally made my day. Will I blow my chances of being named Least Polite Political Blogger if I say "Thank you?"
Posted by: Don Myers | 29 September 2004 at 12:01
Hmm, where is Alas, A Blog? I'm going to check my list and see if I have others to suggest.
Love this idea!
Posted by: SB | 29 September 2004 at 13:36
Alas is actually among the top 100 blogs, so they aren't totally in need of masses of publicity, although I think the site's writers certainly deserve credit for the amount of and quality of their writing.
And thanks, by the way. I wish I was as rude as Mouse Words and Pinko. Damn Southern mother bred that right out of me.
Posted by: Lauren | 29 September 2004 at 17:07
When I called them "least polite" I didn't really mean to imply they were "rude". They just don't mince words. And that's usually a positive thing at Casa de Rox.
I should note quickly that "polite" is not perjorative here, either.
Posted by: Roxanne | 29 September 2004 at 17:11
It may be fun to have a category that Malkin, Insty, and the NRO folks would be sure to win. My suggestion is Most Conspicuous Example of Specious Infotainment.
Just a thought.

Court Jester: add Opinions You Should Have and fafblog!
Best Unknowns: I don't think Neal Pollack's an unknown. I'd add Cool Patience, The Pink Bunny of Battle, The Felonious Elephant, and the group at Niggerati Network.
Polite: Mary Ratcliffe of Pacific Views & Left Coaster really is. So is mousemusings.
Impolite: TBOGG World o'Crap
I love the next category! (Shouldn't all the economists go there?)
Best Group- uhhhhh, assuming I can't nominate our own, I like Corrente, First Draft, Best of the Blogs and Pacific Views
Wingers We Love - Andrew Olmstead.... Dan Drezner.... I wish PJ O'Rourke had a blog...
Posted by: Kevin Hayden | 29 September 2004 at 18:57
Ha! Neal's not unknown--he just barely blogs anymore. He's busy with that stupid *paid* writing stuff.
Anyway, thanks for the nomination. I'm so putting the tile on my blog if I can figure out how the hell to do it.
Posted by: Amanda | 29 September 2004 at 22:57
Actually, Rox, your Least Known has another Well Known as well. Besides Pollack, Michael Berube has a huge audience--a link from his site to yours is worth 300 extra hits a day for several days. I know. A friend of mine got linked and his Site Meter went through the roof. Anyway..

"Rude" should be qualified, I guess, by my also saying that "rude" is often very, very funny.
Posted by: Lauren | 30 September 2004 at 10:25
Kewl, thanks for the nod. So that's why I don't get as many comments as I'd like to get. I make up for it in trolls, though. High entertainment value.
I'm over everyone's head - but at least I'm an "expert." LOL
You need a "Biggest Link Whore" category. :D
Posted by: Trish Wilson | 30 September 2004 at 10:58
But wouldn't that be You, Trish? (Beeyatch!) ;)
Posted by: Moi ;) | 30 September 2004 at 12:13
I nominate myself for a category yet to be determined. :) :)
Posted by: Elayne Riggs | 30 September 2004 at 12:15
Damn, I can't even make the underground nominations. No category for best Pagan blog? Bitchiest? Farthest on the Left? Radical Feminist Blogs? *sigh*
Posted by: Morgaine Swann | 30 September 2004 at 14:16
Moi, I don't think I'm a link whore. More likely "Blogger With The Worst Trolls." LOL
Let's have a blogger Dead Pool. Which male progressive blogger is going to be the first to bring up the "women blogger" thing in November (that'll be 3 months)?
Posted by: Trish Wilson | 30 September 2004 at 15:36
Best Progressive Male Bloggers Who Have Never (to my knowledge) Mentioned the Female Blogger Thing: Meteor Blades at Daily Kos.
Posted by: Jackson Bell | 30 September 2004 at 17:14
Ooh, for the "Seems Like an Expert" list I nominate Stentor Danielson's Debitage, which takes a geographer-philosopher's angle on politics. Who knew there was such a thing? (And he draws political cartoons!)
I heartily endorse Michael Bérubé's blog.
Posted by: Philocrites | 30 September 2004 at 17:55
you are so, so kind. now i feel like a major asshole for posting so infrequently lately. but i appreciate your nomination anyway.
my vote goes to NORBIZ though, obviously!
xoxo, jared

Because of this nomination, I'm now going to have to be as rude as possible. This should be fun. Thanks. :)
Posted by: tas | 30 September 2004 at 18:24
Well, I got f**ked over by the Washington Post, and now I've been nominated in the Potty Mouth Blogger category for the equivalent of the Jackson Family Honors!
There better be a f**king check coming my way...

Court Jester? The only way Fafblog could lose is if the election were done on Diebold machines with instructions from Fox News. Although Jesus' General is in the running.

I'll be godddamned if I will vote for the WP's "blogging contest." It is the same stupid blogs that "everybody" writes about, and most of them aren't even that good. Most began just as blogging took off, and so they have sizable audiences, but that doesn't mean they are any better than many more obscure blogs.
Futhermore, ANY blog written by a professional writer or is connected with a magazine should be automatically disqualified from contention.
