I'm not certain if I was asked because of my gender, my day job or my blogging prowess, but I'm the official guest speaker at tomorrow's meeting of the DC chapter of Drinking Liberally. The fun starts at 7 p.m. at Timberlakes in Dupont Circle (1726 Connecticut Ave, NW) and I'll be yammering about some yet-to-be-determined-by-me topic around 7:30 p.m.
By the way, what should I talk about?
By the way, what should I talk about?
I think it would be interesting to explore why there are no women bloggers.

Oh, how about how every street fair you've been to is better than the ones in NYC? :)

It's a bar. Either talk about what kind of car you drive or how much money you make.
Or, don't talk at all. Tie a cherry stem with your tongue.
Jesus, Rox, don't you go out at all???

I think they've invited me because I'm an "expert" on something. I suppose I am, but ...
And, no street fairs are better than the ones in NY!

Talk about why picking up guys in bars sucks. Then do what Ricky said - tie a cherry stem with your tongue.

Only in the sense that, when you write for your fans, you use pronouns, is you gender an issue. Otherwise, it's your sex to which you refer.
Old, and valid, editors' rule:
"Words have gender. People, bless their hearts, have sex."

Thank you for your interest in national defense, kharris.

Well I hope we're still on for tonight, with the snow and all.
Maybe you can just talk about how cool all of us liberal bloggers are.
Then give us lame guys in the crowd tips on how to pick up women in bars.

I've been told that unless the Metro shuts down, we're on. See you there.

What's your day job?

Oh, I haven't done a disclosure in some time, so here you go:
I'm the Director of Sales and Marketing for the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies. Members of AAN include Village Voice, LA Weekly, SF Bay Guardian, Phoenix New Times, Chicago Reader, etc. In addition to many other things, we publish AltWeeklies.com, which is an aggregate of the best of the alt-weekly press.
I've worked on the BUSINESS-SIDE of newspapering for almost my entire adult life, mostly at alt-weeklies. However, I also had a gig in Tokyo for a few years with Stars and Stripes.
I originally hail from California and am a proud 6th-generation native daughter of the Republic of CA. Now I live in Washington, DC with my husband and two dogs. And, yes, we hate the fucking weather here.
