Friday Random Ten - "Please Make It Stop" Edition
For rules, see the uncommonly acerbic Feministe. Here's MY Random Ten:
- Downloading - Negativland
(NEW! And available for free download here. Yeah, it's sort of a family affair. Well, not really. So, would it kill you to actually BUY the forthcoming full length Negativland CD/book project, No Business? Hell, no. Buy two!) - Why Can't I - Gene Loves Jezebel
- World Leader Pretend - R.E.M.
- Thrilloilogy - Powderfinger
- Sleep Alone - Moby
- Solsbury Hill- Peter Gabriel
- Hummer - Smashing Pumpkins
- Thieves Like Us - New Order
- A Mover El Bote - The Texas Tornados
- Teaching Her - Genghis Angus
Your turn now, either in comments below or at your own blog.
Not to be nit picky, but I believe it's "Salisbury" Hill, which is pronounced "Solsbury" I discovered. They do that a lot, try to trip you up on pronunciation, so they'll know you for an alien. Like "Bicester" is pronounced "Bister".
Phonics, phooey!

I posted an all-women FRT at Lauren's (with your favourite Japanese band as #10), so you get the co-ed edition:
1) Verses from the Abstract – A Tribe Called Quest
2) Guang zhi yi 光之翼 – Wang Fei 王菲
3) Tings an’ Times – Linton Kwesi Johnson (Cho! A jus’ tings an’ times, wandahs an’ sines / But noh get mystic, be realistic).
4) Samurai Showdown – RZA and the Wu-tang Clan (from the Ghost Dog soundtrack).
5) Let’s Push Things Forward – The Streets [That song was a minor hit inna Europe (played all the time on hip radio stations), but I’m curious about its success in the USofA.]
6) Witness – Asian Dub Foundation (from ADF’s first album, Facts and Fictions, prolly one of the illest records I own. I’d be glad to know about their fate in Bruce, Spike and Barbara Lee’s country, too.)
7) Trust in Me – Roudoudou (feat. Jenny De Vivo).
8) Rudie Can’t Fail – The Clash
9) Piss On Your Grave – The Coup (that’s slave-owner George Washington’s grave.)
10) Ultimate Experience – Mad Professor.
That one was sadly predictable: 7 singers/bands from the UK or the US, only one woman (three if you count Jenny De Vivo voicing on Roudoudou’s piece and Pam the Funkstress, who is half The Coup and has an essential part as the band’s DJ).

Kathy F: You're right about the way the name of the place is spelled, but I think you're wrong about the song.
Jimmy: You're right about サンキユ

Well the song is "Solsbury Hill"
and there is a "Solsbury Hill" just outside the city of Bath
whether you can see the 'City lights' from the top, I've no idea.
http://www.answers.com/topic/solsbury-hill
(I was always taught the pronuciation was sauls-bury for Salisbury anyway)

I now have it on good authority that,
"Climbing up on Solsbury Hill" you can indeed see the city (Bath) lights.
(Source was born not 5 miles from said hill)

This is why we allow the British to post on Rox Populi. To set the Americans straight.

Although, to call Bath a "city" seems a stretch. They do have a Hobgobblin, however.

The right of a town call itself a city
is hotly contested and it is at the discretion
of the Crown and not by any fixed set of criteria.
i.e size , wealth etc.
(Although having a cathedral used to be mandatory but no longer). Bath was given it's City Charter in 1590

1. Fix Up, Look Sharp - Dizzee Rascal
2. Sen Kumpe - Lou Deux Bi Lath (from Africa Raps. I can't recommend this record enough.)
3. Rome (2) - Les Savy Fav
4. Cish Cash (Featuring Siouxsie Sioux) -Basement Jaxx (this song is verrry sexy)
5. There'll be Peace in the Valley - Johnny Cash (from Live at San Quentin)
6. The Jig is Up/Skin - Music Hates You (I play in this band, and we rock.)
7. Precious Lord, Take My Hand & You've Got A Friend - Aretha Franklin
8. Be Or Not 2 Be - Saïan Supa Crew (French hip hop)
9. Vie meilleure - Neg'Marrons (and more French hip hop)
10. A Little Rain - Tom Waits (nice one to end on...)
That's some kind of collection, huh? Does it get much more random than that? A little Eric Satie and I think we would have covered everything.
