Boxing Day

I'm told by folks in the know that boxing is still in pretty big deal in Philly. But, I have to admit the thought of it makes me a bit squeamish.

No, I've never seen a live boxing match nor have I watched any boxing on the telly. My only exposure to the sport is through the movies.

Adrienne!

Women weaken legs!

You're kidding, right??

No. It really does make me squeamish. ;)

there's no reason to be squeamish. i mean, i have also vaguely heard that boxing is a big deal here, and yet i've never been to a match, never felt any pressure to go, and don't have any friends who go. other than the vague rumors, this place is no different from anywhere else i've lived on the boxing front. so even if it's a big deal to some people, it's quite easy to ignore.

likewise, competitive eating is apparently big here. but that doesn't mean you're gonna start stuffing 87 hot dogs down your gullet, or watch anyone else do it, just because you live here.

Well, more to the point, you do realize that "Boxing Day" has nothing to do with pugilistics, right?

"Boxing Day" is a traditional, and quintessential, English holiday - the day when the manorial family would box up gifts for their household servants, who didn't get a Christmas holiday because they were waiting on the family while they (the family) enjoyed their own Christmas with servants in attendance.

Basically, the upper class got Christmas on Christmas, and the serving class got Christmas when it was convenient for the upper class. That day was Boxing Day. But it didn't involve prize fights.

Uh, yeah. I didn't just fall off the turnip truck.

I fell off a turnip truck once after having been stung by a wasp...

I was once stung by a wasp ...of the insect variety.

But was you ever stung by a dead bee?

But was you ever stung by a dead bee?

No, but I used to have a great aunt Bea. She's dead *now*.
