Double-standards in Leftopia are pretty interesting. Just so you know the rules, it was a horrible sexist offense when Fox & Friends ran on-screen text that read "The Claws Come Out: Mrs. Obama Aims at Sen. Clinton." But when Barrack Obama said "You challenge the status quo and suddenly the claws come out" at a speech yesterday at Tulane, many readers at Firedoglake and Daily Kos didn't find it offensive or sexist in the least.
Double standards from political junkies?!!? I am shocked, Shocked, I tell you.
No doubt they will say Obama meant it in a different context.

I am clearly way behind on my anti-feminist connotative interpretation.
When I hear the word claws, I think of what's at the end of my dog's toes. What other kind of interpretation is there?
Oh wait...my dog's a bitch. Is that where this is going?

rox really let her claws come out with this post.
Posted by: upyernoz | 08 February 2008 at 09:49
Men have claws too, i.e. Bill Clinton in South Carolina.
Posted by: Agi | 08 February 2008 at 12:13
A dog's claws don't come out; a cat's do. And people who bring out their claws are catty. Or maybe Obama has transcended the misogynistic etymology of cattiness and its metonymic claws.

Oh, I'm pretty sure people know what a "cat fight" is and what it means. Quit pretending.
Posted by: Roxanne | 08 February 2008 at 23:49
It's sexist either way, and the Obama campaign has been using it to the hilt against Clinton. Just one of the reasons why some consider Obama a Republican Trojan Horse.
So now strong willed Michelle Obama gets a taste of her own medicine.
I'm not tearin' up.
This is also just a teeny weeny inkling of what the media and the Republicans are going to do to Obama if he wins the primary.
They should have played a lot cleaner. There are a lot of potentially sympathetic people out there who aren't going to be.

BTW
Has anyone seen the Obama video? Runs like a Coca Cola commercial with not one actor overweight, older, or elderly.
What a vision of a unified America! Everyone is in college and/or young, VERY HEALTHY, and gorgeous.
Posted by: Tn | 09 February 2008 at 02:35
Maybe that's what America needs for its dissidents...just pretend they ain't really there.
They'll go away eventually.
Yey Obama Team!
Posted by: Jonathan | 09 February 2008 at 02:37
Now that's what I call a health plan!
Posted by: Tn | 09 February 2008 at 02:39
The way I read it, it's not exactly a cat fight in this instance. It takes two to do that, and Obama in his utterance presents himself as above that: he's serious and critical, while his detractors or opponents are spiteful and purposefully harmful.
Posted by: J— | 09 February 2008 at 08:32
Maybe Obama's just a comic book nerd and was comparing Hillary Clinton to Wolverine.
Posted by: Augustedoglakekos | 09 February 2008 at 12:43
Wait...is Obama a dog or a horse? I'm confused.
Posted by: Agi | 09 February 2008 at 13:57
Obama is a world where everyone is in college, or looks like a fashion model, or is very, very healthy.
Posted by: Tn | 10 February 2008 at 01:54
That is why they're all unified.
And if you don't agree, shut up and stop ruining the fun. Stop stomping on hope.
Posted by: Tn | 10 February 2008 at 01:55
Keep hope alive.
Posted by: Agi | 10 February 2008 at 19:04
Wolverine I could lose to. He has claws for hands!
Posted by: eRobin | 10 February 2008 at 22:44
Keep thinking alive. Always question politicians. Don't give away your power.
Posted by: Tn | 11 February 2008 at 00:00
And be true to your school.

Gender bashing is alive and well--another trail blazing moment for Senator Clinton--Go Madame President. Guess what girls--wait till you have a real career--it gets really fun then.
Posted by: kathryn | 16 February 2008 at 14:25
This is a silly argument. I have used "the claws come out" in reference to men fighting each other, in reference to computer programs failing. It's a generic phrase, not a gender-specific one.
Obama-haters: read the Audacity of Hope. It's available in paperback. It actually contains a great deal of substance, unlike his standard stump speeches.
Hillary-haters: back off. Hillary may yet be the candidate, and we damn sure want her and not another eight years of failed Bush/McCain policies destroying what's left of western civilization. If you don't think Hillary would be better than McCain, you are badly deluded. Look at their career voting records. It's not even close.

Tn: the Obama video (I assume this is a reference to the will.i.am one?) was produced by some young, thin people on their own initiative, for free, using their own time. It was not produced by advertising agency or some political operative. You expect perfect demographic representation, you go watch something produced by people who care deeply about that sort of thing.
