Fun with Real Audio John McCain
A Shaker notes that John McCain will appear on SNL this weekend and then posts some vids showing his previous appearances. But, this one is the real knee slapper.

Huckabee edition. The first set of data is from last night's election in West Virginia; the second from that state's nominating convention, held in February.
It looks like 32% of these uneducated, backwoods crackers down in Florida still won't vote for Obama.
Seriously, racist people can be found in all 50 states, in all demographic strata. But you knew that already.
Exhibit A: Marc Ambinder.
Forget the horse race numbers for a moment: if the surveys are accurate, the polarization within the Democratic Party has reached critical levels. Nearly six in ten Obama supporters in Indiana say they would be dissatisfied if Clinton were the nominee -- that's (I believe) the high percentage of Obama supporters who have ever said that.
Nope. We've never seen that before. Except for, like, once a decade:
As Christopher Hitchens joins the chorus examining Michelle Obama's 23 year-old belly button lint, this is the sorta thing real people in the real world are having to deal with --thanks to assholes like Hitchens:
Screws witnessed her only son, U.S. Army Pvt. Tommie Edward Jones, commit suicide right before her eyes six weeks ago in Colorado. She says the Army, which promised to be there for Screws and her family to deal with the loss, has yet to provide assistance.
For the benefit of Noz. Via Tom Hanks. BTW, Tom: I seriously don't give a shit who you're supporting, especially since you stole my random ten without crediting me. But, I might change my mind if you revive a certain character ...
I'm getting especially tired of white people talking story with other white people in which they decide which black people get to speak and what they should or shouldn't be talking about.

If you want to know why John and Elizabeth Edwards haven't endorsed a candidate yet, look to today's NYT. In a piece that rightfully beats up MSM's coverage of this year's campaign, Elizabeth Edwards drops this:
And the future of news is not bright. Indeed, we’ve heard that CBS may cut its news division, and media consolidation is leading to one-size-fits-all journalism. The state of political campaigning is no better: without a press to push them, candidates whose proposals are not workable avoid the tough questions. All of this leaves voters uncertain about what approach makes the most sense for them. Worse still, it gives us permission to ignore issues and concentrate on things that don’t matter.
It's not because Obama's ideas or proposed policies are any better than Clinton's. The candidates are nearly identical on every major issue I care about.
They'll both appoint good Supremes.
They'll both do their best to get us out of Iraq.
They'll both try to enact legislation that's both good for the environment and good foreign policy.
But ...
She voted for a war we didn't have to fight. He has a crock-of-shit health care plan. Both candidates came to these positions out of political expediency, rather than what's good for the country. Both positions kill/will kill a bunch of Americans each and every year. So, on this front, to my mind, they cancel each other out.
There have been instances of real (and accusations of imagined) racism and sexism from both candidates, as well as from their campaign surrogates. True-believers on both sides were tediously wronged only when their candidate was on the receiving end while refusing to see when it happened to the other side.
Both candidates have given but minor lip-service to the challenges faced by the working poor.
Neither candidate is a progressive by any but the most minor of standards.
Neither campaign is about us. It's all about them.
Support for the candidates from outlier groups, as well as support from other politicians, was more about a competing DC power structure than anything else. More about those wanting to maintain power and control. More about those who want to get their power back. More about those who expect to get a shiny new seat at the shiny new table when one Ivy League educated perfunctory gets replaced by another privileged Ivy Leaguer. More about who or what controls than anything that is about giving real power to actual stakeholders. It ain't about you and it ain't about me. That's all smoke and mirrors. Window-dressin'. Bread and circuses. A year from now, I won't be drowning shrimp in cocktail sauce at the Chevy Chase Club with Joe Klein, regaling him with my Looking for Mr. Goodbar tales. But, some of the aforementioned folks will be. I guarantee it.
So, why am I voting for Obama tomorrow? All things being nearly equal, why not go with the devil you know?
Leave aside the messaging for a moment (which you may or may not buy into). The Obama Campaign seems to be run much more efficiently and effectively than the Clinton Campaign ...as these two stories from reporters-posing-as-campaign-volunteers (from Philly's finest alternative newsweekly!*) illustrate.
Way back when (and I'm not going to bother to look it up), I voiced that I'd be most interested in the candidate who exhibited managerial competence, in addition to having the ideological slant I agree with. I bet you can guess which way I'm leaning now.

"To you, the toilers, who have made this land, and have no voice in its councils! To you, whose lot it is to sow that others may reap, to labor and obey, and ask no more than the wages of a beast of burden, the food and shelter to keep you alive from day to day. It is to you that I come with my message of salvation, it is to you that I appeal."
I couldn't be the only person out there who misses the infinitely authentic voices of John and Elizabeth Edwards. The fact of the matter is ...neither Obama nor Clinton has done much to appeal to Teh Bitter.
Must be pretty bad if the dude can't get a job in Washington because he's a liar and an incompetent:
The greatest impediment to Mr. Gonzales’s being offered the kind of high-salary job being snagged these days by lesser Justice Department officials, many lawyers agree, is his performance during his last few months in office. In that period, he was openly criticized by lawmakers for being untruthful in his sworn testimony. His conduct is being investigated by the Office of the Inspector General of the Justice Department, which could recommend actions from exonerating him to recommending criminal charges. Friends set up a fund to help pay his legal bills.
Asked about reports that law firms have not taken up feelers from Mr. Gonzales, Robert H. Bork Jr., a corporate communications specialist and his spokesman, said Mr. Gonzales was talking to many people about the next steps in his career. “He is considering his opportunities in law and business,” Mr. Bork said, “but after many years in public service he is considering his options carefully.”
Heh. Maybe your spokesmodel shouldn't be a dude named Robert Bork?
With time, I'm sure the wingnut welfare system will step up and save him with a book contract, an op-ed gig with the New York Times, etc. Or, he can probably wait 'til next January and go back to the BUSH FAMILY CIRCLE JERK: Private Citizen Edition.
I'm glad someone saved this little "in copyright violation" treat. Love the veil! [VIA]
I can't be the only person who finds the tone of this Ron Fournier column troubling.
The same cynicism that makes me predisposed to believe that Obama is a ginormous posseur is the same cynicism that makes me literally laugh out loud at this. And that's why I continue to cling to it.
As my colleague Brian Howard says: Dance candidates, dance!
Noz points to this HuffPo piece and wonders why Clinton stays in the race. I left a comment there and that I'll repeat here:
She has a do-over in Florida and then she makes the case in Denver that she won Ohio and Florida and that the winner next November has to take one or both of those states. The party "sees the light" and she gets crowned.
Adding, that she'll continue to hammer home that Obama has taken states (i.e. Wyoming, South Carolina, Mississippi, Kansas) that "haven’t voted Democratic in a presidential since the Johnson landslide over Goldwater in 1964 ..."
That has to be her strategy at this point.
I'm the first to admit that I'm one of the last great cynics, especially when it comes to the current presidential race. I think most surrogates and high-profile supporters of both campaigns say what they say when they say it with an intended outcome.
In that context, it's hard to imagine that Geraldine Ferraro's recent statements are not intended to do exactly what Jeff Fecke gets at here.
Forgive me if I've mentioned this before.
I can't read anything Maureen Dowd writes without thinking of Looking for Mr. Goodbar. Something tells me that tale had a profound effect on her.
An interesting tidbit from the "Virtue, Liberty and Independence" State:
The Obama campaign which has narrowed the race to four points in the latest survey will keep asking Republicans to switch registration. So far, 50,000 Republicans have switched so they can vote in the Democratic Primary.
Should Republicans determine who the Democratic nominee is? Do you seriously think they'll all vote for His Total Bitchin' Awesomeness come November?
Charlotte Allen is certainly not the first to suggest that American women are a bunch of dumb bitchez who vote with their crotches. She's not even the first in this campaign season. Check out the insidiousness of this Zogby press release from last October:
Democratic women appear smitten by former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina and Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois – just 11% said they could never vote for them for President. Republican women, on the other hand, find former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney most attractive – just 14% said they would never vote for him. Tied for a close second was former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who were found to be objectionable by just 15% of Republican women.A response when I complained about this press release may be found here.
Uno, dos, tres... catorce
Turn it up loud, Captain!
For those who thought that I was being ridiculously hypersensitive when I complained the other day about the racism implicit in the description of Obama as a "shady Chicago socialist" --how does this grab ya:
Obama and I are roughly the same age. I grew up in liberal circles in New York City — a place to which people who wished to rebel against their upbringings had gravitated for generations. And yet, all of my mixed race, black/white classmates throughout my youth, some of whom I am still in contact with, were the product of very culturally specific unions. They were always the offspring of a white mother, (in my circles, she was usually Jewish, but elsewhere not necessarily) and usually a highly educated black father. And how had these two come together at a time when it was neither natural nor easy for such relationships to flourish? Always through politics. No, not the young Republicans. Usually the Communist Youth League. Or maybe a different arm of the CPUSA. But, for a white woman to marry a black man in 1958, or 60, there was almost inevitably a connection to explicit Communist politics
As you might imagine, this storyline is getting pushed by the usual suspects.
For those who can't abide a click-thru to NRO, Jeff Fecke has a pretty good summary and take-down of the Barack Obama is a secret product of a cabal of communist Jews bent on creating biracial children of African descent in a nefarious plot to seize America's vital bodily fluids contention here.
And while we're on the subject, what's up with all the fainting?
While Tommy flies, the world is turning.
Life goes on for you and me.
Our chief concern is money earning,
Why can't someone set us free?
Can't you feel him?
Can't you feel him?
Can't you feel him?
Can't you feel him?
You'll feel me coming
A new vibration
From afar you'll see me
I'm a sensation.
I'm a sensation.
I overwhelm as I approach you
Make your lungs hold breath inside!
Lovers break caresses for me
Love enhanced when I've gone by.
They worship me and all I touch
Hazy eyed they catch my glance,
Pleasant shudders shake their senses
My warm momentum throws their stance.
You'll feel me coming
A new vibration
From afar you'll see me
I'm a sensation.
Soon you'll see me can't you feel me
I'm coming...
Send your troubles dancing I know the answer
I'm coming...
I'm coming...
I'm a sensation.
You'll feel me coming
A new vibration
From afar you'll see me
I'm a sensation.
I'm a sensation.
I leave a trail of rooted people
Mesmerized by just the sight,
The few I touched now are disciples
Love as One I Am the Light...

What exact shade IS a SHADY socialist? As I've said before, some stuff is so deeply ingrained into our language that we hardly notice it at all.
Mrs. Noz says what I've heard alot of women express:
It’s not the unfairness of media coverage alone that sways me, it’s the pervasive unfairness in the way that high-achieving women are treated and perceived more generally. Many of us can point to instances in our own workplaces in which highly qualified women have been passed over in favor of less-qualified men, whose very maleness grants them authority that women have to work twice as hard to earn. The anger at that unfairness builds up, and the attacks on Clinton tap into it. It reminds me that Clinton has had to be tough as nails to make it this far, and I respect that about her.Personally, I would be happy if either Obama or Clinton is elected in the primary. I think they each have strengths and weaknesses, and either should rightfully crush McCain in the general election. If I thought Obama was a vastly superior candidate I would vote for him. But, it ’s a toss-up for me, and the incessant Clinton-bashing pushes me to vote for her in the PA primary. The vote would not be because I feel sorry for her -- that indeed would be a terrible reason to vote for someone. Rather, the bashing reminds me of her toughness, and it also reminds me that there are a lot of bastards out there and it would do some good to see a woman stick it to them.
"I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically when she's feeling down, launches attacks as a way of trying to boost her appeal. ... .."
UPDATE: upyernoz adds, by email:
add hilzoy to tas' list.actually, i'm really curious about who find what obama said to be intentionally sexist and who sees it as a stretch. at first i thought it might be a male-female thing. but now i've found a bunch of women who think the sexism is a stretch, and there's males like lambert who think it's clearly sexists.
instead the main factor does not seem to be sex, it seems to be whether the person reading the quote or seeing the clip already had a positive or negative view of obama. i mean, everyone i read and speak to who was inclined to support obama, whether total obama-heads or even people who don't like obama but prefer him over clinton, seems to think it's a stretch.
on the other hand, people who already favored clinton (or just don't like obama) are the ones who seem to be finding the remarks to be sexist.
so what does it all mean? it means everyone (including me) may just be seeing what s/he wants to see. and that this incident isn't going to convince anyone.
that is, unless someone out there can find me a counter-example. have any obama supporters found this to be sexist?
Now that the world is finally zigging a month behind me, it might be time to zag.

In its exhaustive documentation of MSNBC's sexist coverage of the 2008 presidential race, Media Matters leaves out the "why." Well, the "why" in my not-entirely-uniformed opinion is pretty obvious. In fact, it explains a great deal of the coverage we're seeing.

Good grief, this article is specious.
I couldn't care less about Obama's drug use in high school and college. Given that it's widely known that the sitting president couldn't show up for Guard duty because he was coke'd up for most of that period of his life, I thought we'd all be over this.
Moreover, arguing that Obama would manufacture stories about his youthful experimentation with drugs to gain "street cred" is really beyond the pale.
Double-standards in Leftopia are pretty interesting. Just so you know the rules, it was a horrible sexist offense when Fox & Friends ran on-screen text that read "The Claws Come Out: Mrs. Obama Aims at Sen. Clinton." But when Barrack Obama said "You challenge the status quo and suddenly the claws come out" at a speech yesterday at Tulane, many readers at Firedoglake and Daily Kos didn't find it offensive or sexist in the least.
What is it about the difference between the two that gives Obama the edge in caucuses and Clinton the advantage in the primaries?
Wow. I've been saying much of this all along.
Short of the distribution of Vince Foster murder videos, the embrace of every rightwing "Klinton" talking point is now complete, albeit in a cloaked fashion. Which brings me to another point...
A few days ago, I'd come 'round to the viewpoint Kevin Drum expressed earlier today. Lucky for me, I don't have to vote until April 22.
Faced with the terror of McCain taking the reins of the Republican Party, Bill Kristol (hater of white women) urges Conservatives to stop crying in their beer:
This is an important moment for the conservative movement. Not because conservatives have some sort of obligation to fall in behind John McCain. They don’t. Those conservatives who can’t abide McCain are free to rally around Mitt Romney. And if McCain does prevail for the nomination, conservatives are free to sit out the election.
But I’d say this to them: When the primaries are over, if McCain has won the day, don’t sulk and don’t sit it out. Don’t pretend there’s no difference between a candidate who’s committed to winning in Iraq and a Democratic nominee who embraces defeat. Don’t tell us that it doesn’t matter if the next president voted to confirm John Roberts and Samuel Alito for the Supreme Court, or opposed them. Don’t close your eyes to the difference between pro-life and pro-choice, or between resistance to big government and the embrace of it.
And don’t treat 2008 as a throwaway election. If a Democrat wins the presidency, he or she will almost certainly have a Democratic Congress to work with. That Congress will not impede a course of dishonorable retreat abroad. It won’t balk at liberal Supreme Court nominees at home. It won’t save the economy from tax hikes.
But when you read between the lines, you'll also find something of an obit:

If last night's debate was a boxing match, it would have gone to the judges. And actually, it wasn't anything like a boxing match. Instead, it was a rather civil, mostly truthful, adult conversation about the issues.
Josh Marshall bottles up my general perception of the affair rather neatly:
In the context of the race, I think this helped Obama because it put the two of them on the same level, the same stature level. As I've said before, Obama in general has not been a good debater. But this was a good one for him. Clinton on the other hand I think helped herself by getting the focus back on her, as opposed to her husband. Not that there's anything wrong with Bill. But this is her election. I guess on points I'd give this to Obama because of the exchanges on Iraq, but it was a very close call. And both had a good debate.
Plus, Obama finally served some steak with that sizzle.
Richard Florida makes an interesting observation:
...it seems to me the 2008 election may well turn on class lines. I have long said the central animating issue in American politics is neither partisan polarization nor the culture wars but a festering class divide. Obama may appeal to progressive members of the creative class who swung Iowa, but can that group (roughly a third of the workforce) swing the general election his way. Seems to me there is an even larger group of working and service class people who are frightened, scared, anxious, angry and resentful about what is happening to "their" America. Critics of my own work have already attempted to reduce the creative class to "yuppies, sophistos, trendoids, and
Since the SOTU, I haven't been able to get this flick out of my mind:
Claire McCaskill's shit-eating grin here hasn't helped:
The emotional IQ on display in this entire affair is really disappointing. And obviously, dude hasn't learned yet that turning Clinton into a victim doesn't work for him.
As regular readers know, I've been leaning towards John Edwards from the start. Now that he's out, I'm left with what Matt Taibbi described as a choice between poetry and prose.
Lord knows I love poetry. Like Obama, I'm a child of the twilight between the Boomers and the Xers. Our earliest exposure to the greater American narrative was shaped by political assassinations, Watergate, trips to the moon, large scale dissent, generational warfare, bad pop music, bad pop psychology, and ...well, you get the picture. In that way, I think I might have an affinity with Obama that others might not have. At the same time, I've struggled with supporting him. Mostly because I can't get past his "all poetry, no prose" message. Deep in the pit of my stomach, he feels like a poseur. And the burden of proving to me that he's not is on him.
While I thought the Clinton Presidency was pretty damned great all-in-all --and especially in comparison with every other presidency of my entire lifetime, I also have issues with the prose candidate. But, unlike the sexist, irrational, media-driven Hillary Hate-Hard-On Circle Jerk, my objection to Clinton hinges solely on her voting record. And electibility. And coat tails.
As most folks have observed, Clinton and Obama are nearly indistinguishable on the issues. So, my choice between the two is probably going to come down to intangibles. They both have until April 22nd to fight for my vote.
If you're a certain kind of Republican, I guess it sucks to be you today:
I think the Republican establishment needs to know just how many of us voters will never vote for McCain. I certainly won’t. I’ll just pass if he’s the nominee. I like the country’s chances with 4 years of Hillary better than 8 years of McCain (as much as it pains me to say that about a Republican)…
The electorate needs to know that McCain cannot win in November… and if I’m wrong about that and he does win in November, I think American voters will get the wrong impression of what it means to be a conservative. I have issues with all the Republican candidates and feel that no true conservative is still in the race… but if McCain becomes the nominee, I won’t vote for him.
Remember how I told you back in November that this was coming?
An inside joke vid, with a wink and a nod to Jane.
Some Wikipedia editor needs to get to work on a new definition for that.
Amanda points to what I imagine is the tip of the iceberg:
Bush ended his required orals with something garbled about getting to the people's business. And the way those last lines were delivered seemed ...more infantile than usual.
In response to this "Lifetime Movie version of a shitty-to-begin-with press release," I'm in complete agreement with this statement from Jill:
*I should also be clear that I think she has a legitimate point about how coverage of the candidates is unbalanced. I do think that media sources — including progressive sources — are much harder on Sen. Clinton. I think it’s too bad that point was obscured by all the other stuff she wrote.
UPDATE: This silly screed has been universal condemned by the online feminist community.
So ...
Which candidate do you think will get it? And does his imprimatur matter?
It looks like Taylor noticed the same thing I noticed last night.
"They're trying to bamboozle you. It's the same old okie-doke. Y'all know about okie doke, right? ... They try to bamboozle you. Hoodwink ya. Try to hoodwink ya. Alright, I'm having too much fun here. ... "
- Barack Obama"You've been hoodwinked. You've been had. You've been took. You've been led astray, led amok. You’ve been bamboozled." - Malcolm X
For myself, I kind of like the fact Obama would repurpose Malcolm X in 2008. But, I'm not sure it's going to work with those disgruntled Republicans and Independents his campaign is going after with the message of "everyone coming together" and whatnot.
UPDATE: It looks like the section quoted above was from a different speech Obama gave recently in South Carolina and not his victory speech last night. With all the footage I saw last night, I must have gotten confused.I bet you thought I was joking when I wrote this.
Tuesday, TPMers unearthed this robocall transcript from an entirely-too-much-time-on-his-hands Hillary hater:
Hillary hired Jack Palladino to run a terror campaign on Kathleen Willey to keep her quiet about what Bill had done to her. They nail gunned her car tires and stole or killed her pet cat named Bullseye. Hillary thinks cats are expendable; can you trust her?
To learn how I performed this amazing feat, rent Bruce Davidson in The Lathe of Heaven.
On a more serious note, Chris Matthews' sexist obsession, Andrew Sullivan's hate hard-on and Roger Stone's 527 (HILLariously called C*U*N*T. Cunt. Get it? How original! What a knee slapper!) ...you know this all comes from the same place? Right?
